TEAM TITLES
Junior Boys’ Team Sparring (N-111)
As is par for the course, junior boys teams at the Super Grands were packed and stacked with top rated players from several countries. It was anyones guess as to which powerhouse would rise to the top. Nearly every team had former or present world champions somewhere on their rosters. Sage Northcutt was on teams in 2005 and 2006 that won titles and this year as a member of Schumann’s Team with Guatemalans Luis Cuellar and Juan Pablo Santiago he was destined to attempt a record being the only team member to be on a winning team three times. Defeating Team Alchemy of Texas they were poised against Team Kingi for the Grand Finale showdown. Team Kingi defeated Team Academy of North Carolina. In a wild and exciting Finale Schumann’s Team became victorious 19 to 15 leaving Guatemala with its first junior boys team victory since 1994.

Junior Girls’ Team Sparring (N-112)
While the name Team Schumann carried on into the junior girls’ division the team members were not from Guatemala. With fighters Ally Montero, Ashlee Grant and Colbey Northcutt – Florida, California and Texas made up the team members. Their opponents were the venerable Straight-up Team consisting of players from New Jersey, Massachusetts and Ontario, Canada. While Straight-up started in the led, by mid-match the score was tied 8 all with Colbey Northcutt excelling in the final match to give Schumann’s a 3 point victory and the title for 2009. Team Kumite was third.

Men’s Team Sparring (N-113)
Nearly all the men’s teams had present or former NBL world champions for a grand total of 18 of the 24 top 8 team players. It looked like a whose who of fighting legends including Gaffar Adam – a winner of Super Grands 1, Raymond Daniels – one of sport karate’s most winniest fighters of all times and Trevor Nash: the most winningest adult fighter in NBL. In the end Team All Stars with Jack Felton, Raymond Daniels and Carlos Tearney eliminated Mexico’s Team Zen and Team GOP eliminated Schumann’s Guatemala Team leaving two American teams for the prestigious world team title. The powerhouse All Star Team then defeated Team GOP 33 to 15 for their first victory in NBL, however all three members have been on winning NBL adult or junior teams in the past.
